Brisbane Jazz Club

A white boat house sits perched on the banks of the river under the Story Bridge.  Quiet and unassuming, it bears witness to life unfolding in the CBD and a myriad of CityCats whizzing past on the way to the next stop.  Blink and you’ll miss it.  But by night this sleepy boat house comes alive, the sound of live jazz filling the air.  This is the Brisbane Jazz Club, the city’s only live music venue dedicated to jazz music.  So if jazz is your thing, then you really owe it to yourself to check this place out.

  

Run by a group of dedicated volunteers, the Brisbane Jazz Club features a great line up of local, national and international jazz artists every Thursday to Sunday night.  Once a month, the club also hosts a Sunday Brunch session which we tagged along for.  These are immensely popular and seats fill up quickly, so it’s best to book ahead.

We were greeted at the door by friendly staff and shown to our table in the front row directly facing the stage.  Each table seats four people so unless you are going in a group, be prepared to meet some fellow jazz enthusiasts.  The club’s interior is dimly lit and quite moody with rich red walls adorned with music paraphernalia – perfect for an evening of jazz but not necessarily for brunch in my opinion.  There’s a bar adjoining the main room where you can purchase tea, coffee and drinks to enjoy before or during the show.

  

Whilst the musicians were warming up we all headed outside onto the deck for brunch.  Catered by the Story Bridge Hotel, the buffet style affair included creamy scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms,tomatoes, hash browns, fresh fruit and flaky pastries.  Simple fare but done really well and utterly delicious.  Soon after brunch began, our trio of musicians (John Hoffmann on flugelhorn accompanied by David Spicer and So Yeong Min on piano) began their set and most of our fellow patrons returned indoors with their plates of food. It was a beautiful day so we remained outside, listening to jazz in the last of the summer sunshine by the river.
